Black Cockapoo to White Cockapoo ~Exploring the World of Cockapoo Colors

Cockapoos are delightful  dogs resulting from the crossbreeding of Cocker Spaniels and Poodles. One of the many aspects of these furry companions is their wide array of coat colors. From the classic black Cockapoo to the stunning apricots, Cockapoos show diversity in their coat colors. My Momma dog, Emma, is a black Cocker Spaniel, and of course she is adorable. When she is bred to a Poodle with a party coat, most of her puppies turn out black with tan markings. Some with white chests and maybe a solid black Cockapoo. While my breed focus is more on health and personality, it is fun to geek out on coat color too.

1. Phantom: Phantom Cockapoos have distinct markings. These markings appear above the eyes, on the sides of the muzzle, on the throat, chest, legs, and paws.
2. Merle: Merle is a fascinating pattern characterized by mottled patches of color against a lighter background. *While it is possible to breed Merle Cockapoos responsibly, severe health problems can result from breeding two Merle genes together. Personally, I avoid breeding the Merle gene through DNA testing to ensure we don’t run into any problems with Merle.
