Cockapoo

What is a Cockapoo?

Cockapoos are a cross breed between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle (usually toy or miniature).

Cockapoos (aka Cockerpoo, Cockerdoodle or Cockapoodle) became popular in the 1960s as the original “designer dog”. They earned this title for several reasons. Their size as a smaller dog in addition to minimal shedding makes them travel ready. Their intelligence and loyalty makes them trainable. Not least of all, Cockapoos are ridiculously cute.

However, their title as “designer dog” does not give the Cockapoo the justice they deserve as a family dog.

Cockapoos are playful, affectionate, smart, and just love being with you. They are typically great with kids and other animals.

Let’s break it down.

Cocker Spaniel

The American Cocker Spaniel is the smallest of the “Sporting” dog breeds. For a long time it was ranked the #1 dog in the US to own especially after the release of Disney’s Lady And The Tramp children’s movie. They are usually great with kids and have a sweet temperament. Originally, Cocker Spaniels were bred to be bird hunting dogs with a “soft mouth” and super smeller of a nose. They are hearty and can live a long time.

Poodle

Poodles were first bred as water fowl retrievers. In the 1600s they became popular among the nobility of Europe, especially France for their regal looks and intelligence. Shortly after this, poodles began to be bred down in size to miniature or toy as companions for wealthy families and ladies. The smaller poodles were coveted for loyalty, trainability and low shedding fur.

More recently, in the 1950s, Poodles were named the #1 dog to own in the US. Beloved for their fashionable walk, fun to style fur and affectionate personality.

Poodles typically are loyal, intelligent and fun, fun, fun! They bond closely with their owner and would prefer to be with them than anywhere else. In fact Poodles are considered one of the most intelligent breeds and are very intuitive, especially towards their owners.

Poodles have “non shedding” fur that is considered hypoallergenic which can be good for people with allergies. They typically are healthy and can have a long life.

Cockapoos; Why cross breed?

While purebred dogs carry specific desirable traits, they can also carry specific health issues. By “cross breeding” two breeds, the health issues that typically occur can be greatly minimized. Here are some health concerns to take into account when considering a cockapoo.

Crossing the playful, affectionate heartiness of the Cocker Spaniel with the low shedding, fun, loyal intelligence of the Poodle is a  win win.

The result is the ever charming Cockapoo.

Why get a Cockapoo Puppy?

People may choose to get a Cockapoo puppy for various reasons. Here are a few common factors that make Cockapoos popular among dog owners:

  1. Cute and Adorable: Cockapoos are known for their cute and charming appearance. They often have a teddy bear-like look with soft, curly or wavy fur, and their expressive eyes can win the hearts of any dog lover (or even anyone on the fence about dogs).
  2. Hypoallergenic Qualities: Cockapoos are often considered hypoallergenic, which means they are less likely to cause allergies in people who are sensitive to pet dander. This is because Cockapoos can have hair rather than fur (Poodle influence) which reduces the amount of shedding and dander.
  3. Temperament: Cockapoos are generally friendly, affectionate, and social dogs. They tend to get along well with people of all ages, including children, and often exhibit a gentle and loving nature. They can be great companions and family pets.
  4. Size and Adaptability: Cockapoos come in different sizes, depending on the size of the Poodle parent and the breeding. They can be toy-sized, miniature, or standard-sized, allowing individuals or families to choose a size that suits their living situation and lifestyle. Cockapoos are known to adapt well to various environments, including apartments or houses with limited space.
  5. Intelligence and Trainability: Cockapoos are a mix of Poodles and Cocker Spaniels, both of which are intelligent breeds. As a result, Cockapoos often inherit these traits and are known for being smart and trainable. They can excel in obedience training and enjoy mental stimulation, which makes them a good choice for families looking for a trainable and responsive dog.
  6. Companionship: Many people choose to get a Cockapoo for the companionship they provide. These dogs are known to be loyal and devoted to their owners, often forming strong bonds with their families. They thrive on human interaction and love being a part of their owners’ lives. They are affectionate and give great snuggles.

It’s important to note that getting any type of puppy requires commitment, time, and effort to properly care for and train them. Before bringing a Cockapoo or any other dog into your life, consider your lifestyle, available time, and resources to ensure you can provide a loving and suitable environment for the puppy throughout its life.

Cockapoo colors

Cockapoos come in a variety of solid colors including black, white, red and chocolate. They also come in a variety of patterns.

The “parti” pattern means that the coat of the cockapoo is over 50% white with a secondary color anywhere on the coat.

The Merle gene causes modeling in many colors and can effect the skin and eyes. The eyes of a dog effected by the Merle gene will usually have at least one blue eye.

Gold Heart Pups has some adorable puppies. However, breeding for color is not our priority. We focus on breeding for health and temperment.

Whatever color your cockapoo, it is sure to be a sweet and joyful companion.
